15-year-old dies after being struck by car at dangerous crossing on way to school bus. $20 million. San Bernardino County.

Jin Ouk Burnham, aged 15, was fatally injured in a car accident whilst crossing a road to get to a bus stop established by his High School. His adoptive mother attempted to sue the school district, the city of Fontana, the state of California, the driver and the people of the state.

Jin was in a coma for 15 days as a result of the siginificant trauma to his head and body, Jin passed away on December 21st 2015, His mother sought recovery for wrongful death damages for the loss of her only child.

The jury found the School District 100 percent responsible for the damages. The jury awarded Jin’s mother $4,500,000 in past non-economic damages and $16,000,000 in future non-economic damages, for a total verdict of $20.5 million. Case was in trial for 23 days and verdict was ranted after only 4 hours of jury deliberation time.
